Open Letter to Doctors from a Working Mom

Dear Doctors,

I appreciate the care and the treatment you provide to both of my children. Without the competence of you and your colleagues they would not have made it this far. It's hard to express the amount of appreciation I feel.

However, I have a bone to pick with all of you. I realize you are a doctor and you work M-F hours. Some of you work only in the mornings or only on Monday and Tuesdays or only after 2:00 PM when the moon is waning or waxing.

The truth of the matter is, your wacky hours SUCK. I appreciate that you can shoehorn my children in when they are wheezy or sick. But honestly, I need a little more flexibility, because I work full time too. So, it's hard for me to come to the office on Wed. at 1:15 PM, with a follow up at 8:15 the next day and then a follow up the monday after at 10:00 with another well-child visit on Tuesday at 10:00 and ANOTHER synagis appointment on Friday at 2:00. All for one child at one doctor's office. Five appointments in 8 days and all of them during business hours? It seems quite unworkable.

In my dream world, you wouldn't be hamstrung by the HMO/Managed Care model and I would be a stay at home mom where I am able to take baby to and fro. But the reality is different. So, you know what would make a mom happy? Flexible hours. Maybe evening hours one day a week. Or combining a well baby appointment with his monthly synagis shot?

Thanks so much,

Bad Mommy

Oh man do I feel your pain. When I was having to get school forms filled out and get pre and post surgery apointments, it was a nightmare. The worst is the brace place which is an hour away and only 1 or 2 days a week and only during work hours. ?!?!?!?

I do appreciate the "we can see you today" thing, but damn....

I hope neither of us get sick.. I don't know if we'll have the days.
